SOKENDAI (総合研究大学院大学), also known as Gradueate Institute for Advanced Studies, is one of the postgraduate-only institutions in Japan. Students at each course belong to the corresponding national research institutes and thus can work closely with professional researchers. There are 5-year and 3-year courses, each of which corresponds to the integrated MS-PhD and PhD-only courses, respectively.
ISM (統計数理研究所; The Institute of Statistical Mathematics) was founded in 1944, aimed at forming inter-institutional collaborations in research of mathematical statistics, information systems, computational science, and their applications. ISM also runs a peer-reviewer scientific journal in the field of statistics, Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (AISM).
Research assistant funded by my budget: depends from time to time; ask me directly
Regrettably, Japanese PhD programs are on self-funded basis for now. Nevertheless, I would like to financially support prospective students as much as possible, by supporting application to the above financial supports and offering RA positions, so that students can focus on their studies with less concerns.
Before the application, you need to contact a potential supervisor.
If you seek a postdoc position
(As of January 2026) I do not have sufficient funding to offer a postdoc position for now. The information will be updated based on the availability.
The easiest way (for me) is to apply JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship, which is a self-funded postdoc program. I can accept JSPS postdocs without concerning about the funding.
If you seek an intern position: ISM has an annual internship call. The deadline for usual years is in late-Feburary and the stay length is usually up to 60 days.
Except the ISM official internship call, I can host visiting students from time to time. Please directly reach out to me (with your research interests) if you are interested in.
